My first pocket money as a young boy on the farm involved plucking the wool off dead sheep. The sheep had to turn green otherwise it was too hard to pull out. Now later in life I am still selling wool.
We started WA Wool Pellets after reading about using complete sheep fleece directly on top of the ground to regulate soil temperature. We later found the fleece blew around and became quite untidy.
After reading about the fleece being used on the ground I did some research and found some information around using wool pellets in the soil. America are big users of wool pellets and so are European countries. Mongolia exports 2,000 tonne of Wool Pellets per year.
After reading and watching everything I could find on Wool Pellets we decided to give it a go. We ordered a machine from China as we only wanted to test the market so we bought a small machine. China saw me coming and added lots of hidden costs I had no idea about but that was the start of many discussions around the performance of the machine. With a lot of modifications through trial and error we managed to make the machine useable, so we started our Wool Pellet manufacturing journey.
Our first test was in a vegetable garden where my wife mixed potting mix, soil and soil conditioner. On my side I went to the soil place and said give me the worst soil you have and so I came away with yellow lawn sand. It did have some chook manure added. I mixed the Wool Pellets at 50 grams per 4 litres measured and weighed. A few extra pellets were put at the roots of the seedlings for moisture and nutrients close by. The yellow sand garden using only Wool Pellets was way better than the garden with all the regular fertilisers added.
We now use Wool pellets all through our garden including flower beds, pot plants including succulents. We find the plants flower for longer and maintain better foliage.
